Outdoor Motion Detector Light to an Existing Outlet : Your best way to add security perimeter of your home is with motion deteing lights, They also make your house conserve energy with automatic shut off switches. The light operates on a sensor beam projected in a pattern that, if broken, will turn the light on for a user-set period of time. Wiring the light into an existing outlet makes the project simpler and avoids the need for a separate circuit.

Instructions:

Things You'll Need:

    * Stud finder
    * Junction box
    * Pencil
    * Reciprocating saw
    * Screwdriver
    * 1 roll 12-2 gauge romex electrical cable, 20 feet
    * Wire cutters or strippers
    * Outdoor motion sensor light kit
    * 3 wire nuts

1.Turn the power to the outlet off. The circuit breaker that controls the power should be turned off at the main service panel, located in the utility room or garage.

      2.Locate the desired place on the exterior wall where the motion light will be installed, and be sure the location is close to the outlet that will be used to power the motion light. The light should be installed in the same wall cavity to avoid drilling through wall studs.

      3.Mark the spot for the motion light. Use the stud finder to ensure no studs are located behind the mark. Place the junction box over the mark, and hold it flat against the wall. Trace the shape of the box on the exterior wall.

      4.Cut along the pencil trace to form a hole in the exterior wall that is large enough for the junction box to fit in. Use a reciprocating saw to cut the hole in the wall.

      5.Open the outlet that will be wired to the light. Use a screwdriver to remove the screws that hold the cover plate and secure the outlet in its electrical box. Pull the outlet out of the box, but leave the existing wiring attached.

      6.Feed the romex cable down through the hole in the exterior wall, down the wall, and out an existing hole in the back of the existing electrical box. Leave about eight inches of cable extending out of each location. and cut away any excess cable.

      7.Strip three inches of outer insulation off one end of the romex cable. Spread the three inside wires apart, and strip one inch of insulation off the black and white wires. Repeat this step on the wires at the other end of the romex cable.

      8.Attach the wiring to the existing outlet. Connect the black wire to the outlet's brass screw, the white wire to the silver screw and the bare wire to the green screw. Replace the outlet in its electrical box, and tighten the screws down. Replace the outlet cover, and tighten its screws down to secure it in place.

      9.Punch out a knockout hole in the back of the new junction box. Feed the wiring through the back and out the front of the box. Insert the box in the hole in the exterior wall, and secure it in place by tightening down the screws with a screwdriver.

 10. Attach the motion light's wiring to the romex cables wiring. Twist together the same colored wires---black to black, white to white---and twist the green wire to the bare wire. Twist the wires in a clockwise direction, then twist a wire nut onto each connection to secure the connections.

      11.Insert a screw through each hole in the frame of the light, and screw them into the junction box. Tighten each screw down.

  12. Turn the power back on at the service panel. Screw the included light bulbs into the sockets. Test the light by walking in front of the motion sensor light to trigger the light on.
